The Kirklees Young Musician of the Year contest takes place at another excellent venue, the University of Huddersfield St Paul's Hall and is organised and hosted by The Mrs Sunderland Music Festival on behalf of the sponsors listed above.

This contest is only open to young people - between the ages of 16 and 25 on 1st January in the year of the competition - who intend to pursue a professional musical career. A minimum standard of Grade 8 is expected.

Competitors must either:

  1. Have been born in Kirklees or have lived in Kirklees for a minimum of five years, or
  2. Be following a Music Course at a College of Further/Higher Education in the Kirklees area, and have spent at least one year on the course

Candidates are eligible to enter the contest three times provided they have not won it previously.

Contestants are required to submit a balanced programme of
15 minutes’ duration. They may bring their own accompanist.

The winner will be expected to perform part of his/her programme at the Gala Evening in the Huddersfield Town Hall on the final evening of the festival, when the prize cheque and trophy will be presented by the Mayor of Kirklees.
